Reverseosmosis is the process of forcing a solvent from a region of high soluteconcentration through a membrane to a region of low solute concentration byapplying a pressure in excess of the osmotic pressure. This is the reverse ofthe normal osmosis process, which is the natural movement of solvent from anarea of low solute concentration, through a membrane, to an area of high soluteconcentration when no external pressure is applied. The membrane here issemipermeable, meaning it allows the passage of solvent but not of solute.

ROPlants work on the Crossflow Filtration method, which takes the feed water anduses a percentage of it as a wash or reject stream, removing the solids duringthe filtration process.
